In today’s world of instant gratification, low patience, and wanting things done yesterday – steadfastness is a virtue I would like to cultivate in my children. It is a virtue you do learn naturally as you complete books, finish school curriculum, and graduate from high school. These feats require a steadfast diligence that hopefully bleeds into other non-required areas of life. With homeschooling it is so easy to not finish something you’re hating. Who’s going to know if you quit? Tailoring your kids education to their needs and interests allows us to be more flexible and less steadfast – which is great. And yet, I believe being reliable, hard-working, and being able to put your nose to the grindstone to get something not-preferred done, is crucial in functional adulthood. I want my kids to be steadfast.
What is Steadfastness?
Steadfastness is being reliable. It means not changing your mind but being loyal to something or someone no matter what. It means plugging away at something until it is finished, no matter how slow. When you are steadfast, you commit to something or someone for the long-term, through good times and bad.
We have officially been working on our home renovations for over a year. A lot of work has been accomplished and there are just a few things left to complete – a built in entertainment unit and new carpet in the TV room, and a deck in the backyard. This is definitely an exercise in steadfastness. In some ways, we have no other choice but to finish the project – I’m not going to live with a half-done home forever. I wish it was moving faster, but slow and steady it is getting done. Sometimes I feel like I just don’t care anymore – just do it as fast as possible, I don’t care what it looks like. But taking the time to do it right will be worth it. Sometimes good things take time.
I am thrilled to say that once our bedroom furniture is delivered on Saturday, the extension part of this renovation is done. DONE! WHAT?! OMG. Here are a few photos of the finished spaces.

Anyways, some of you didn’t come here for renovation photos. So without further ado…the books!
Kids Books About Steadfastness
Here are some books I’ve read with my kids that we’ve loved that explore this idea of sticking with something until it is done or staying loyal to someone through good times and bad.
Mother Bruce by Ryan T. Higgins

Bruce did not want to be burdened with a family – and somehow he ends up with a gaggle of goslings to teach and to steward through life. Despite his grumpiness about it, he remains steadfast in his dedication to their well-being.
A Birthday for Bear by Bonny Becker

Bear and Mouse are steadfast friends. Bear does NOT want to celebrate his birthday, but Mouse insists on making it happen to celebrate his friend.
Pretzel by Magret and H.A. Rey

Pretzel never gives up on the love of his life, Greta. He remains her steadfast loyal friend until she eventually returns his love.
My Great Aunt Arizona by Gloria Houston

My Great Aunt Arizona is about a teacher in a small town who through her many years of steadfast teaching impacted the lives of many students.
Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel by Virginia Lee Burton

This is one of my son’s favourite books – a story of an old steam shovel who still works well despite fancier newer equipment taking away all the jobs. Together with her owner, Mike Mulligan – they dig the cellar for the new town hall in record time. Mike is steadfast to his steam shovel, Marianne. He doesn’t send her to the junk yard just because she isn’t new, shiny, and diesel or electric-powered.
The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown

If you loved Goodnight Moon, you will love the surprising twist on the last page of this book that binds these stories together. This is the story of a mother rabbit and her steadfast love for her child.
I hope you enjoy these books with your kids as much as we have!
Warmly,
-Heather
