Kids Books About Loyalty

You know the saying, “a picture is worth a thousand words?”, meaning a picture can contain an entire story within? I think some sentences are like that too. Just three words can contain so much unspoken story. This week my three word story is: My grandma died.

Me and my grandma

I was fortunate to have a wonderful relationship with my grandma throughout my life. She has always been someone I can come “home” to, even though I’ve lived on the opposite side of the country, and now continent, from her. My grandma was fiercely loyal to her family and friends – I never heard her say a bad word about anyone, and everyone was always welcome at her table. My grandma was sweet, kind, and just full of all the best lovable grandma energy. She gave the best cuddles. I am sad that she is gone, but I am relieved for her to be reunited with my grandpa and my mom and that she is released from a body that was no longer serving her living spirit.

Fishing with grandma

In honour of my grandma, I thought I’d write about kids books about loyalty this week.

What is loyalty?

Loyalty means supporting someone or something you believe in no matter what – even when it is hard. You can be loyal to your friends, your family, your beliefs, your country, or your values.

When you are loyal, you commit to supporting and being with them no matter what happens. You intend to be in each others lives for your entire lives.

Sometimes though, people betray us. Betrayal is a kind of hurt where we lose our trust in that person or people. We are only able to be loyal to others when we trust that they have our best interests at heart and they care about us. When someone betrays us and breaks our trust, a loyal commitment between us is also broken.

Here are some books my kids and I read featuring loyal characters.

Island Boy by Barbara Cooney

In Island Boy, a family is loyal to the land their family settled on, choosing to stay on the island and care for it, despite it being remote.

The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge by Hildegarde H. Swift and Lynd Ward

It seems that technology changes overnight and even though the things we did out of loyalty for someone might change with the times, the underlying love doesn’t change. That is the story that is told in the Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Grey Bridge.

My New Friend is So Fun by Mo Willems

In this story, Gerald and Snake are worried that their best friends have found a new best friend, but they should never have doubted their friend’s loyalty!

The Biggest Bear by Lynd Ward

In the Biggest Bear, a little boy adopts a bear cub, who grows into troublesome but loyal big bear. The boy is told by the neighbors to kill his bear friend but…spoiler alert, he finds him a home at the zoo.

Alone in the Frog and Toad Complete Collection by Arnold Lobel

Frog and Toad are the ultimate loyal buddies! In this story, Frog disappears to have some alone time so he can feel sad. Toad searches for him so that they can feel alone together.

I hope these stories fill your home with warm, loyal, fuzzy feelings! They certainly made me feel proud of who and what I have the honour of being loyal to!

Warmly,

Heather
