Kids Books About Friendliness

It was my birthday this week and I experienced so much friendliness from friends and family near and far! Thank you everyone!

I think Friendliness is my favourite virtue of them all. My personal modus operandi is being friendly to everybody all the time. If you catch me on a day when I’m not being my lab retriever norm personality, just know – I’m in pain, or sick, or I haven’t slept in 3-4 days.

What is Friendliness?

Friendliness is being warm, kind, courteous, and welcoming to others. It is sharing what you have and who you are with others. It is listening to others and learning about them and their interests. When you are friendly, you try to make people feel more comfortable and welcome. You think about what they might need to feel good and you try to provide it for them. When you are friendly, you care for others without being asked – it brings you joy to put a smile on someone else’s face.

Here are some books I read with my kids this week featuring friendly characters!

Amos and Boris by William Steig

In Amos and Boris an unlikely friendship blossoms between a mouse and a whale. They each use their strengths to help each other.

A Visitor for Bear by Bonnie Becker

Bear does not want friends! But mouse continues to invite himself into bears life and eventually Bear learns how nice it is to have a friend. If I was a character, I would be Mouse. I just love Mouse.

Stellaluna by Janell Cannon

Stellaluna is a bat who is friends with birds. Despite their differences in abilities and habit, the two species find common ground and stay friendly.

Franklin’s New Friend by Paulette Bourgeois

Another great Franklin book! In this one, Franklin is intimidated by the size of the new student in school, Moose. But he is friendly and gets to know Moose and they become great friends.

Frog and Toad – Alone by Arnold Lobel

I’ve linked the Frog and Toad Treasury because it contains all the Frog and Toad stories. We love Frog and Toad! They are excellent stories, and are great for early readers. While friendship is explored in pretty much every story, Alone is a favorite of ours about the friendship between these two!

I hope you enjoy reading about some friendly characters this week!

Warmly, your friend,

-Heather
