Space-Related Fictional Stories
Do you have a outer-space-loving kiddo? Me too! We spent all last year learning about space for our homeschool science curriculum, and I thought I’d share about the fictional stories my son read in his free reading time.
Before we get started, in this age of AI-generated content, I just want to say – I am a real person. My son and I really have read these books. No part of this post is AI-generated. This list of book suggestions is grounded in what real people have read in their real lives. I hope you find a book in the list below that inspires a kid in your life to read for fun.
I love books by Torben Kuhlmann. The illustrations are gorgeous and the story of a mouse who makes it to the moon is a delight. This is a long picture book.
Midnight on the Moon by Mary Pope Osborne (Magic Tree House)
Magic Treehouse Midnight on the Moon is a great independent read for kids ready to start chapter books.
My son read both Lunar and Stellar independently and couldn’t put them down. He’s read them both several times. The reading level is a bit harder than Magic Treehouse, but not much. The books are short and the font is pretty large.
The Martian (Young Readers Edition) by Andy Weir
Ah! We love The Martian! My son loves man against nature stories (hello I Survived series!) and he loves scientific problem-solving. This young-readers edition of The Martian combines these two things by figuring out how to survive on Mars.
The Lion of Mars by Jennifer L. Holm
I had originally bought The Lion of Mars to read aloud together as part of the Brave Writer curriculum, but my son book-napped it off the shelf and read it for fun in 4th grade. He really enjoyed it.

Space Case Trilogy by Stuart Gibbs
My son has read and re-read the Moon Base Alpha series by Stuart Gibbs. I think he read them in 3rd-4th grade.
George’s Secret Key To the Universe by Lucy & Stephen Hawking
This is a new series for us! My son is independently reading this series by Stephen Hawking and his daughter, Lucy. There are five books in the series and he’s enjoying them so much he’s doing math to earn a Stephen Hawking book as a reward. Do I deserve a mom-of-the-year award? Yes. I do.
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
My son and I read this one together this year. We loved it! There are a few swear words and one or two mentions of adult intimacy that we kind of just skipped over. But otherwise it is 10-year old appropriate as a read-aloud. Then we watched the amazing movie starring Ryan Gosling on Amazon Prime.
